200th anniversary of the Battle of Sandomierz 1809

Sandomierz News from June 7, 2009. In the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Sandomierz the enemy armies clashed again at the Opatowska Gate. This is a history lesson, especially for the young generation. Nearly a hundred of soldiers from many armies in the smoke and rumble of cannons struggled in fight for the fortress. This time it was an acurate reenactment of of the events Napoleon's 1809 Campain. At that time the army of the Duchy of Warsow clashed with the Austrian forces. Polish army had to beat the Austrians defending the stronghold of Sandomierz. Polish troops were leaded by General Michał Sokolnicki. Organizers of the show took care about the details of reenactment. The culmination of the battle were the fights at the Opatowska Gate. Capturing it meant victory for the Poles. Such spectacular reenacted battle made huge impact on the tourists. It's great, such show is quite rare in Sandomierz. It not of of this time. To lekcja historii szczególnie dla młodego pokolenia. Blisko setka żołnierzy kilku armii w huku armat i dymie po raz kolejny toczyła bój o twierdzę. Tym razem była to wierna rekonstrukcja wydarzeń kampanii napoleońskiej z 1809 roku. Wtedy to wojska Księstwa Warszawskiego starły się z siłami austriackimi. Polskie wojska musiały pokonać austriaków broniących twierdzy sandomierskiej. Polskimi oddziałami dowodził generał Michał Sokolnicki. Organizatorzy widowiska zadbali o szczegóły inscenizacji. Kulminacją bitwy były walki przy Bramie Opatowskiej. Jej zdobycie oznaczało zwycięstwo Polaków. Tak efektownie odegrana bitwa robiła wielkie wrażenie na turystach.
